• Follow circuit, organiser and governing-body rules.
  • Keep the camera clear of airbags, controls, mirrors and sight lines.
  • Use a rated tether when required and route it away from driver movement.
  • Inspect every fastener before each session.
For HERO13 racing use, prefer the built-in fingers.

GoPro’s own magnetic-latch page says to use the camera’s built-in mounting fingers for high-shock and high-vibration activities including auto racing and off-roading.

Choose a useful view

Centre windscreen
Strong road view and often good GPS; must not obstruct vision
Harness bar / cage
Excellent cockpit context and rigidity when an approved clamp is used
Dashboard
Easy access but often vibration-prone and thermally exposed
Roof / exterior
Clear GNSS and dramatic view; greater safety, weather and retention demands

Why rigidity matters

Mount flex creates rolling vibration in video and contaminates IMU readings. Use the shortest practical arm, remove unnecessary pivots and tighten interfaces. A soft dashboard pad may look secure while oscillating under braking.

Protect GPS reception

A roof, metallic sun strip or heated/metallised windscreen can attenuate GNSS. Test the exact position by recording a short clip and inspecting fix state and path rather than assuming the GPS icon is enough.

Installation checklist

  • Full steering and gear selection without contact.
  • Belts, helmet and HANS movement clear.
  • Door and airbag deployment zones clear.
  • Fasteners locked and tethered as required.
  • Lens level, horizon visible and exposure tested.
