MOTORSPORT DATA / INDEPENDENT REFERENCE
Know what your hardware actually records.
Source-checked answers about onboard cameras, GPS, IMU, lap timers and vehicle data—written for people who need to record a session and make sense of it afterwards.
Separate devices create separate clocks. A workable setup needs both useful data and a credible way to align it.
START WITH THE QUESTION
What are you trying to work out?
A / CAPTURE & LOGGING HARDWARE
Start with evidence, then judge the use case.
A headline specification is not a verdict. Each record separates sensor capability, recorded output, accessible output and the software needed to retrieve it.
RaceBox Mini S
Official specifications list 25 Hz multi-constellation GNSS, accelerometer and gyroscope sampling internally at 1 kHz, and standalone storage. The BLE protocol says motion readings are averaged to 25 Hz output.
- GNSS output
- 25 Hz
- Motion output
- 25 Hz via BLE
- Standalone log
- Yes
- Vehicle data
- No direct CAN stated
AiM Solo 2 / Solo 2 DL
AiM’s current technical sheet lists 25 Hz GPS and an internal three-axis ±5 g accelerometer plus three-axis gyroscope. The DL variant adds CAN, RS232 or K-Line ECU connection.
- GPS
- 25 Hz
- IMU
- Accel + gyro
- ECU link
- DL model only
- Storage
- 4 GB
DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro
The camera records up to 4K/120 fps. DJI documents sports GPS data through the separate Osmo Action GPS Bluetooth Remote Controller; built-in camera GPS is not documented.
- Video
- Up to 4K/120
- Built-in GPS
- Not documented
- External GPS
- DJI remote
- Video format
- MP4 (HEVC)
Why only three records? This is the verified seed set, not a pretend-complete catalogue. Device families are added only after manuals, formats and practical constraints have been checked.
REFERENCE / GPS SAMPLE RATE
One number changes what you can see.
At 160 km/h a vehicle travels about 44.4 metres each second. Sample frequency does not equal positional accuracy, but it determines how often the receiver can describe the path.
Real results also depend on antenna position, satellite geometry, receiver filtering, multipath and the accuracy of each fix.
Too sparse for detailed braking-point or racing-line work.
A substantial improvement for lap timing and broad line comparison.
Finer temporal detail; fix quality and processing still matter.
B / SETUP & RECORDING
A reliable recording beats a perfect spec sheet.
Settings are a trade-off among analysis value, heat, storage, vibration and session duration.
Choose frame rate deliberately
60 fps provides more frames for slow-motion review than 30 fps, but increases storage and processing load.
Get a fix before the out-lap
Give the antenna a clear view of the sky, wait for lock, then verify the log before leaving the venue.
Mount rigidly and record orientation
Mount flex and vibration contaminate motion data. Sensor axes must be known before acceleration can be interpreted.
Test the whole powered setup
External power adds cables, heat and a possible interference source. Test the exact adapter and routing first.
C + D / WORKFLOWS
“Compatible” is not a complete answer.
A useful workflow maps every source, output file, clock and channel—and says where manual post-processing is required.

Call out missing channels, app dependencies, proprietary formats and OBD-II constraints.
EDITORIAL METHOD
Every technical field carries its evidence.
We start with manufacturer manuals, technical sheets and protocol documentation. Reputable specialist testing is used for observed behaviour. Community reports are supporting evidence only when official material is silent.
- 01Record the exact claim
Value, unit, operating mode and model variant stay together.
- 02Attach the source
URL, document title, page or section, access date and source type.
- 03Label confidence
Official, independently observed, community-reported or unknown.
- 04Explain the consequence
Translate the number into what it changes during capture or analysis.
If a value cannot be verified, it is shown as Unknown, Not officially documented, Requires third-party software or Device/app dependent—never guessed.
