Position comparison
| Position | Image | Vibration | GNSS | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windscreen | Clear forward view | Low–medium | Often good; glass dependent | Sight-line/legal restrictions |
| Dashboard | Low angle; reflections possible | Medium–high | Glass dependent | Flex, heat, airbag zone |
| Roll cage | Strong cockpit context | Low with short rigid clamp | Roof can attenuate | Approved attachment/tether required |
| Harness bar | Driver inputs + road | Low–medium | Roof can attenuate | Must not interfere with belts |
For driver analysis
Place the camera high enough to see the circuit and near enough to the vehicle centreline to reduce misleading parallax. Including hands and a small amount of dashboard can help correlate steering and shift events.
For GPS and IMU
Camera GPS wants sky visibility; camera IMU wants a rigid mount with known axes. Those goals can conflict. If telemetry quality is critical, mount a dedicated logger independently rather than compromising camera framing.
Safety and retention
No generic recommendation overrides venue rules. Do not mount to an airbag cover or let a suction arm enter the driver’s movement envelope. For high shock, GoPro specifically recommends HERO13’s built-in fingers rather than its magnetic latch.
